Key Features

Play with the BABA cards like mahjong!

A game with a mahjong-like feel, where you draw from the deck, discard from your hand, build up your hand, and sometimes exclaim “PON!
When you’ve completed your hand, declare ‘WIN!’ and win ‘KOBAN’! You also have a chance to get a ‘DORAYAKI’ bonus!

All cards are BABA!

BABA is a family name, printed on the cards in 9 different ways. And the character OBABA, means ‘grandma’ or ‘old lady’ in Japan.
The OBABA card can be used as a wild card for any suit.

The cards are confusing and thrilling!

Don’t get cocky! Kanji may look the same but lookout for little differences! It’s confusing! You may look carefully but the trap is lurking.
Call “PON” on a wrong card… O-kay… that bungle will cost you! (Ha!)

Delicious bonus points DORAYAKI

Collecting the same kanji cards as kanji on the “Dorayaki” chip makes a better hand. Play your “Dorayaki” with gusto, complete the hand for doubly delicious bonus points! A play on words of “dora” in Mahjong.

KOBAN coins for scoring

Take the WIN! and get “Koban” (koban is an old Japanese coin). Depending on the strength of your hand, the Koban pile up, they jingle jangle, and the laughter may never end! (KOBAN are made of gold-color paper)

Two sets of rules, two degrees of difficulty

Fun for the first timer with “Beginners Rules” and “Expert Rules” for the serious Mahjong fan. Printed English instructions included.

Game Overview

Instruction video: Beginner rules (English, 4 min.)

Game Basics Common to both “Beginners Rules” and “Expert Rules”

  • All players start each hand with 5 cards.
  • The goal is to collect 2 sets of 3 matching cards. The OBABA card can be used as a wild card for any suit.
  • Players draw a card from the pile or pick up a card discarded (discard) by another player. Discard one unneeded card face up in the discard pile.
  • When a discard is picked up to complete a set of 3 matching cards, the player exclaims PON! The cards are then placed face up in front of the player.
  • When a player has collected 2 sets of 3 cards of the same suit the player exclaims WIN! That hand is concluded. The winning player receives (a) KOBAN(s). When the DORAYAKI chip matches your card, you score bonus points!
  • Play until one player has no KOBANs remaining.
  • The player who has the most KOBANs wins the match.

Draw a card from the pile and discard unneeded one!

When you pick up a discarded card to complete a set of 3 matching cards, exclaim PON!

When you’ve completed your hand, declare WIN!

Beware of misidentification!

The kanji on the cards are similar and slightly different. Even Japanese people can easily mistake them! If you exclaim “PON!” or “WIN!” with the wrong card, you’ll be penalized!

Expert Rules: More ways to WIN! More ways to a high score!

The “Expert Rules” add more mahjong-like rules. You can enjoy making a variety of Yaku and aim for a high score.

  • Increasing DORAYAKI by KAN
  • Scoring bonus points by Menzen and each Yaku (combination)

Yaku combinations

BABA Yakuman
4 matching cards and 2 OBABA → 5 KOBANs

Chin-itsu (馬 or 場 or 々)
All cards with matching kanji → 2 KOBANs

Hon-itsu (馬 or 場 or 々)
Including OBABA, all other cards with matching kanji → 1 KOBAN

San-toitsu
3 pairs → 1 KOBAN

Ba-ittsuu
1 x 6 different 場 cards → 1 KOBAN
